Meeting September 13, 2011. reported by Jessica Van der Veen Photos by Will Carter

To open the meeting President Joan Peggs introduced a short video "New Generations" on attracting young people and creating "New Generations" of energy in Rotary. Tom Lidkea led us in O Canada and Will Carter said Grace. President Joan then showed us a video called TURN NEW GENERATIONS INTO THE NEXT GENERATION OF ROTARIANS. It introduced us to RYLA and other Rotary organizations that promote youth mentoring and turning New Generations into Next Generations.

Sergeant at Arms

Toonie GameFines master Jim Force was in "fine" form today! He instigated the Toonie game which caused much mirth; Eugen won by being so "handy" at predicting Heads or Tails.

Rwanda Event Info

John JordanDavid Westler introduced our speaker, Rotarian John Jordan, and we all agreed to forgive him for being an American. (Just kidding John!) David also remarked on John's drive and passion.

John's speech outlined the advantages of the extraordinary Boot Stove which will save thousands of Rwandans from respiratory illnesses that have, to date, been the #1 cause of illness and death in Rwanda. This deceptivel. simple (actually high tech) design went through multiple iterations to create a stove that burns a fraction of the fuel; it is so hot that it burns away most of its own gases and emissions. The youth who make the stoves from local clay chose to invest their earnings in pigs and rabbits so they could earn enough to continue their schooling. The stoves even self-cure after one week of air-drying! John will be going at the end of September to organize production of 3,000 stoves. This project is spreading in a six mile radius but clearly has national potential and has benefitted the widows and grandmothers who were the original targets of the project. Interesting fact: More than 50% of Rwanda's parliament is made up of women.

Boot Stove
Perry Bamji thanked John Jordan (above, with stove) who received a standing ovation. Perry called the stove a "vaccination for the whole family". An event on October 14 at the Monterey Centre will be a fundraiser for Rwanda and will feature John and others giving firsthand accounts of their experiences.

Tom led us in The Queen to close the meeting.

Introduced by Neil Madsen:
Kathy St. John, a friend of Joan Peggs. Kathy is head of development for the Belfry Theatre here in Victoria.

Heather reminded us that Sept 20th meeting is at George Jay Elementary, 1118 Princess Avenue. Lunch and Smartboard demonstration.

Dallas reported that a Ghost Bus tour could be either the 21st or 22nd of October – family is welcome. The $35 fee goes to the non-profit Cemetery Society.

Health of the Club:
Joan Peggs reported that: David P. had surgery and is home, but has been difficult to reach. Foster I. was pleased to have his membership extended this year. He is in Sooke and seeking Long Term Care. Peter L. is coping with a loss in the family.
