Rwanda Forum SpeakersLast night's (October 14) Rwanda Today forum at the Monterey Centre saw a standing-room only turnout. Above (right) with fellow speakers Major (Retired) Philip Lancaster and John Nsabimama is event organizer, John Jordan.Eugen Jessica

Jim Laing introduced our speaker. Jessica Van der Veen (above, performing a spontaneous dance with Eugen) spoke of her journey from acting to public administration to Provincial Politics. She recounted how she learned to draw on her own experience and emotions to create roles as an actor, and then discovered that the same emphasis on authenticity informed her work as an administrator and most recently as a politician. Lorna Curtis thanked Jessica for her good work on stage and in public service.

Meetings for the Community Services Committee and the Rwanda Committee took place after the main meeting.

drummersThe Rwanda Today attendees were warmed up before the forum with a colorful African drumming and percussion workout led by Jordan Hanson of Drum Victoria.

Jim Force introduced former Oak Bay Rotarian Tom Croft as a guest of the club. (Rumour has it that he’s returning as a member!) We hope so Tom - take a bow!
TOM CROFT

Mary Canty reported on the health of the club: Joe Prentice has not been feeling well lately but hopes to be back to Rotary soon.

Wynn Taylor was the Sergeant at Arms. Among those fined included:
Dallas Chapple - for having a particularly large residential listing in the local paper.
Jessica Van Der Veen, for having her picture in the paper recently dancing at the Canadian College of Performing Arts. Jessica then had a dance with Eugen Bannerman (see above centre) while we watched the graceful pair.
Heather for running the local marathon in her best time for the distance.
All those who failed to eat an orange vegetable during the Thanksgiving Weekend.
