BULLETIN FOR NOVEMBER 21, 2006. Reported by Heather Aked

Seen at the last Hotel function in 2006. Looking forward to Spring of 2009.

Past-President David Maxwell chaired this meeting giving President Tav MacPherson a chance to sit back and relax. David opened the meeting with a request for 5 Rotarians to sign up as Benefactors – thereby starting this foundation meeting with $5,000 committed to the future of the Rotary Foundation. Tom Lidkea played for a rousing rendition of O
Canada and Irene Davie gave the invocation in lilting Scottish.

Visiting Rotarians & Guest, introduced by T. Takahashi:
Ross McLaughlin, Harbourside;
Jim Porter, Calgary S.
Margaret Patrick was the guest of John Edgell & Joan Peggs.

Health of the Club
Mary Canty reported both good news and bad. On a sad note, Nan Minto died on Sunday. There will be a celebration of Nan’s life at Colwood Golf Club on November 30, 2006. The good news is that Lorna’s operation on her bulging disk went well and Lorna is at home recovering and in extremely good spirits.

Mark Bedford began by fining Joan for her flip remarks about the Sergeant-at-Arms and announced that there were 3 spots remaining on the sign up sheet for the Christmas Kettles which he expected to be complete by the end of the meeting. John Snively was fined for being so elated and happy; Foster Isherwood for appearing on TV on Monday night (Foster claimed ignorance), and David Maxwell was fined for completing most of the meeting official business prior to the singing of O Canada; Irene Davie was fined for being a master of the Scottish language and Ron Cooley volunteered that he was the last one in.

Anyone who wasn’t at last week’s meeting was asked to donate any change on their person. Giles
Bixler was fined for pulling the white marble last week, and finally, anyone not wearing a Rotary pin and badge was fined. Birthday and anniversary cards were handed out to Lori Mcleod (one of each), Foster, Dallas, and Bert Whan Tong (on leave). There were numerous happy and sad dollars – Les & Mary, Leslie, Foster, Heather ($20), Lori ($20), Jack ($5), Ron, & Neil Madsen.

Heather reminded everyone of the Christmas Party at the University Club – Tuesday December 19th - and passed around the sign up sheet. Tav presented key fob’s to both Joe Prentice and Jack Petrie for their recent proposal of new members – Joe for his own and Jack for Jan Stirling. David thanked Pablo for the $48 cheque – proceeds from coffee sales to club members.

Program: The Rotary Auction

Program today was the Rotary Auction to raise money for the Foundation. David provided us with some details on how Foundation funds are used, whether it be for humanitarian grants, Polio, District simplified grants or program awards and expenses.

The Rotary Auction
was a huge success and very entertaining. Total: $9575. THE AUCTION was ably conducted by Neil Rawnsley.

* I just needed a little bit to complete a Paul Harris Fellowship but the bidding was too rich for my pocket this year, so I gave Neil R. a small check. Congratulations to all who so enthusiastically made this the most successful auction in our history (according to Foster)!

Finally, Neil R. thanked the chef and his staff for providing us with such great luncheons.
