Program for November 9, 2010. Reported by Don O'Coffey

President John may have been nervous last week but he almost missed the singing of O Canada this week. A lot of pressure by the tax auction committee to make time for this fundraiser.

We had a wonderful display and time of remembrance led by Rev. Wynn Taylor, who said that it was always a sad time for him as we were honoring the memory of all those who served our country in a time of need.

Leslie Rogers-Warnock spoke of her father in law, a pilot who escaped after his plane was shot down and was sheltered by a French farming family for several weeks. He was finally liberated along with his French family by the invading allied troops.

Eugen Bannerman read an appropriate poem. Bill Sharlow’s son Mike and wife Jean came to be a part of the service and brought Bill’s medals for display. Also on display were pictures of two of President John’s relatives and a book with a photo of a young Jack Warnock much younger than when I knew him.

Celebration Master Perry Bamji was rushed to do his job by the tax auction people, but still managed to get a few dollars into the pot. The fines I had time to write down were: Ron Beyer for being late, George Pritchard and Foster Isherwood - a couple of dollars in for the privilege of being members for 32 years.
Good news Heather Aked contributed for Alexander’s birthday.

After all the rush the Tax Auction got under way with our Master Auctioneer David Maxwell. David managed to sell $3000.00 dollars of tax receipts in a matter of a few minutes for $7161.00. Good job David. This of course left President John with 20 minutes left for his elevator speech, which included something about John Jordan breeding rabbit’s in Rwanda.

lest we forget

As there are no photos this week, I've gone into the archives to come up with a couple of photos of our members recently deceased, and one of a past Nov 11 Ceremony (2009), below.

Visiting Rotarians And Guests

Hans Ockemueller introduced our guests today, Mike and Jean Sharlow, who were guests of the club.

Tav Macpherson had his father’s medals on display and spoke about his father's heroism during World War II.

Tav: I want to pay tribute to all men and women who have served in the armed forces, whether in the Air force,  Army or Navy and in the Merchant Marine.

My special war hero is my Father.  In 1937 he was Cadet Captain at Dartmouth College. Two years later he and many other young people were plunged into a horrific war. Over the next several years he served in the Navy seeing a lot of action in both the Atlantic and in the Mediterranean.

He was well decorated for his courage and leadership, receiving the DSC and Bar, the Atlantic Star, the Africa Star, the Italy Star, the War Medal (1939-1945) and the General Service Medal (navy).  He was one of the lucky ones who returned home alive and in relatively good health.

We should remember that hundreds of thousands died in this war, often slow, agonizing deaths in squalid and sordid conditions.

Many of those who returned home alive did so with severe physical and or mental disabilities.  The suicide rate of veterans is significantly higher than the general population.

So on this Remembrance Day, I ask you to pause and give thanks to those who have paid the ultimate sacrifice in serving their country.
