Announcements

Jim Force thanked the Club for assisting in the collection of 5,120 books for the Times Colonist Book Drive that will be held on May 14th and 15th. Jim also encouraged the members to go buy books from the sale as the proceeds benefit the Raise a Reader program.

John Edgell reminded the club of the District Conference in Tacoma on June 4th & 5th. There are funds available from the Club to offset the costs.

Joan Firkins gave the last call for members to donate $20 for the wine centerpieces for the Tuscany Dinner and, if anyone still wants to attend, we have 3 tickets left.

Leslie Rogers-Warnock is passing around  a sign-up sheet for the meeting on May 31st at the Bard & Banker on Government Street. She suggested members carpool if possible. There are parking lots at the Bay Centre and on Yates Street that are closeby.

Tav Macpherson asked us for the last time to record the number of hours of service that we have dedicated to Rotary in the past week.

Phil was also a certified frogman for the Canadian Naval Reserve and a diving officer. Phil joined Rotary in 1998 and was a Centennial President in 2004-5. Phil and his wife, Ruth, now live in Victoria and have 2 grandsons.

Guest Speaker
Debbie Thompson

Rod Sim introduced our guest speaker, Debbie Thompson, who is the Executive Director for the Greater Victoria Coalition to End Homelessness. Debbie has been in Victoria for the last year and relocated from Toronto.

The coalition is a partnership of local service providers, all levels of government, the business community, and the faith community. The partners work together to support projects and provide resources. Their mission is to end homelessness by 2018.

The priorities for 2011 are:

- strengthening relationships with the CRD municipalities
- leveraging capital funds from CRD for provincial & federal investment to create   more permanent affordable housing
- strengthening ties with Aboriginal & First Nation communities
- developing & implementing a prevention plan
- strengthening community engagement and communications

Debbie talked about the myths regarding homelessness, such as that homeless people choose not to wok and that anyone can find a home. Some of the causes of homelessness are: job loss, inadequate income, youth transitioning from care, and domestic abuse.

Housing projects that are underway are:

39 units at 120 Gorge Road;
36 units at Olympic Vista;
23 units at Swifthouse.

Hans Ockermueller thanked Debbie for the presentation and gave her the famous Rotary mug.

Sergeant at Arms:

Will Carter fined Wynn Taylor for not wearing a pin in a picture in the Times Colonist. He also fined all those who wanted the Canucks to win. This day in history: In 1534 Jacques Cartier visited Canada (actually Newfoundland, which was not part of Canada yet). So those members whose names were derived from Jacques (Jack, Jackie, etc.) were exempt from the $1 fine.

Birthdays & Anniversaries
We sang Happy Birthday to Neil Rawnsley, and acknowledged Jack & Brannan Petrie's 11th anniversary and Vicki and Tim’s 32nd!

Happy and Sad Dollars
Cory Burger had a sad  dollar because the Canucks won. Cory! Lynne Murray had a happy dollar as she is leaving this week to go to the Rotary Conference in New Orleans via Kansas. John Snively also had a happy dollar for starting a new business. Brian Lamb (below) won the draw but drew black.

Don't forget to look in your cupboards for any old Oak Bay Rotary items - such things as banners, Paul Harris pins and medallions, Rotary pins, mugs, display items - anything you no longer need that might save the club money in purchasing costs.
