Program for May 6, 2008, reported by Barry Mutter. CLICK HERE for Print Version
President Jack noted that May is Friendship Month and reminded us of all the friends we make as members of the Club. He also remarked that one third of our membership have joned in the last five years, so there are many new friendships that have been created recently. O Canada was sung a cappella and Angele Munro said grace.

Visiting Rotarian and Guests, introduced by Lynne Murray.

Marilyn Rudin, from Lake Oswego, Oregon, exchanged a banner from her Club.
Jill Croft, Heather Croft and Naomi Hogg were the guests of Tom Croft;
Tim Ewanchuk was the guest of Heather Aked.

Announcements:
Heather Aked announced (to the apparent surprise of President Jack) that the summer social will take place Sat. May 24th at Jack & Brannan Petrie’s house. I believe it is potluck with appy’s, salads, and deserts to be brought by members to accompany the hamburgers and hot dogs plus vegetables which will be provided. 5:00 pm on at 1750 Gonzalez.

Joe Prentice announced that there will be candidates from a Norwegian group study exchange gathering at Ted’s studio for an open house on May 20th. Further details are available from Joe Prentice and there will be another announcement at next weeks meeting.

Health of Club:The club was made aware of Barbara Bristol-Price’s son. He had suffered heart problems before returning to Thailand and was in the hospital receiving a stent.

The Fed. Govt. has designated May 4-10 as Emergency Preparation Week.

Sergeant-at-Arms
Brian Lamb exercised his constabulary authority and extracted copious amounts of cash from self-professed innocents in our club. Heather Aked and Wolf Schopper were two victims. Brian tried fruitlessly to punish several tables for not reading their Rotarian Magazine well. Three tables stymied his efforts by answering his quiz correctly. In frustration he called upon Irene Davie, John Edgel and Jim Force to levy the next fine. Irene, with great courage, directed the fine to the S of A himself. Justice prevailed.
Birthday cards were distributed to Neil Rawnsley and Jim Force while it was noted that anniversaries have been celebrated by Jack Petrie, Vicky Pitt and George Pritchard, together, of course, with their respective spouces.
The draw was won by Jerry McLean.

Guest Speaker, introduced by Gary Nazar. As is often the case, our best speakers come from within the club. Neil Rawnsley is no exception to this. Gary rhymed-off a curriculum vitae that was so detailed that this writer couldn’t keep up. Neil has had so many executive positions on so many business and community boards that it suffices to say that he is a highly accomplished Rotarian and citizen of Victoria. We are fortunate to have a member of his caliber in our Club. Neil spoke passionately on two topics that he is deeply involved in. He had just recently attended PETS (president elect training seminar) and intimated that anyone who has aspirations to become more immersed in Rotary and the ideals that Rotary represent should attend. The opportunity to mix with Rotarians from several states, provinces, and countries is a privilege. The opportunity to spend a weekend learning of the difference R.I. is making in the world and what you can do to bring that message home to your club is also a privilege. Rotary is a team and is ever more becoming a team led by young enthusiastic leaders. A melding of the wisdom of experience and the passionate zeal of youth can lead Rotary to new heights. Neil knows that Rotary truly makes a difference and is reminded of these two statements that pertain to Rotary: Mankind is our business and Service above self. The remainder of the meeting was devoted to the Foundation. Neil noted that our Club includes many Paul Harris Fellows, and he was proud to present additional ones today.

New Paul Harris Fellow: Peter Lawrie, (who joined only this year).
Designated P.H.F. by Rotarians: Tim Ewanchuck (Heather Aked, her 3rd)

It is obvious that Neil Rawnsley is passionate about the Foundation and, in his presentation,
proved that there are many more within the Club that share this passion.

Congratulations to all those who received recognition today! Don Coffey thanked Neil for his presentation and for reminding us of the things we do well.
