Program for May 4 , 2010, reported by Jerry McLean. Photos by Will Carter and Gary Nazar

The May 4 meeting opened with Jack Petrie (seen at right) doing a very short, albeit humorous, version of the Rotary Pledge. [Editor's query: doesn't pledging have something to do with wine?]

Dallas Chapple was presented with a Paul Harris Fellowship.

Sergeant-at-Arms

Sergeant-at-Arms Leslie Rogers-Warnock gave a very spirited talk and prescribed at least two fines on your poor scribe. Neil Madsen won the draw this week.

Guest Speaker
Eugen Banerman, the guest speaker, (seen at right) gave an energetic talk on Al Howie, one of Canada’s greatest ultra-distance runners.  He is most famous for his run in 1991 of the Trans Canada Highway (7,295 kilometres) in a time of 72 days and 10 hours; a record time.  A brass plaque on Victoria’s Mile Zero marker commemorates this accomplishment.  He raised $750,000.00 for a fund for children with special needs during this run. Mr. Howie was also known for his participation in the “Prince George to Boston” marathon in 1979.  The winner of this race was promised an all-expense paid trip to the Boston Marathon.  Rick Hansen won the race, Al Howie finished third and Terry Fox came last, a mere 10 minutes after the final able-bodied runner.   Mr. Howie competed in many long-distance races including the Trans Canada run and the 1,300-mile Sri Chinmoy race in New York, both of which qualified him for the Guiness Book of Records. Eugen was thanked roundly for his speech.

Carnarvon Work bee

Above: Rotarian Wynn Taylor with Manager of Parks Services Lorne Middleton, and below, John Snively, Pete Lawrie, Lee Wakely, and ? at the Carnarvon Rotary Water Park Working Bee today (May 5, 2010). The Saturday morning work crew spruced up the Rotary Water Park to get it ready for opening on the May long weekend.  The Oak Bay Rotary Club built this park 20 years ago and since that time the club has supported the park through funding improvements and annual work parties to get the it ready for use each year.  The Rotary Water Park is enjoyed each year by thousands of children and their families throughout the region.

Visiting Rotarians And Guests
One guest and Rotarian signed in for the meeting but left prior to the official introduction??

About the wine and the Tuscan Dinner! The goal is to have one bottle of Italian wine donated by each club member. For convenience, Jack will have additional bottles of wine at the meeting on Tuesday but by all means please bring your liquor store purchase with you to the club. It will be very much appreciated. See more details below.

Tuscan Dinner

Spring Time in Tuscany dinner and auction.
DETAILS: Monterey Recreation Centre, 6PM on May 15. The evening will feature a four-course Italian dinner as well as silent and live auctions. One of the live auction items is a one-week stay for four in a Tuscan villa and includes cooking classes and a 14-course lunch. Proceeds will go toward upgrades for the Rotary Water Park at Carnarvon Park.

Note from Joan Firkins: All tickets are sold!

However if you would like to put your name on a Wait list for tickets, should some be available, please contact Anne Sims. Alternatively, volunteers are needed for the night; if you don't have a ticket maybe you'd like to help serve dinner, working with the Interact students?

Volunteers needed as follows: 3 spotters needed during live auction; 50/50 ticket sellers (2 people); Bar ticket sellers (4 people); Balloon sellers (4-5 people); 'Prosecco' drink distribution (2 people). And a request: Is there anyone in the club who has a spouse/partner who is renowed for their cookie making ability? On good authority I am told that a dozen awesome home baked cookies will do extremely well in the live auction when handled by our auctioneer Dave Stevens! Please let Joan Firkins know if you can assist.
