Program for May 3, 2011 - Reported by Jack Petrie

Another good turnout as Prez John sashayed out to open with comments about this n' that and an accapella version of the anthem, invocation by Corey in which he kindly gave thanks and praise to those who give us a good lunch each Tuesday...the staff. After salty lasgana and fixins' Tav awarded a Paul Harris to Wolf Schopper, a plus 2, then recognized our 'Joans squared' a la Firkins and Peggs for their dedication to the Foundation. Photo right.

ANNOUNCEMENTS
Joan Firkins updated us on the progress of the Tuscan dinner. Lots of prizes and goodies in store for us and thanks for good volunteer responses. BUT STILL 16 TICKETS LEFT... Let's sell those!

Will Carter put us on stand-by to get ready for volunteering our hard-working and hilariouly fun shifts early June for the Tea Party. Let's get sticky with candy floss and make lots of new friends!

Jim Force sang our kudos for over 2000 books collected for the Book Drive. Kudos to you Jim! Eugen previewed our upcoming programs, one of which will unfold at the Bard and Banker at the end of May.

Don OCoffey thanked the handful of volunteers who swooped in to cook n' meet at UVIC for the ALS Foundation; that'd be Renate, Lynne, Corey, and John Snively in particular.
Extra! Extra!

Royal Wedding NewsLorna's Royal Wedding Monterey Centre's Royal Wedding Tea was attended by (and captured for the world to see) our own Lorna Curtis, looking Regally Royal in red and black.

Wolf Joans Tav

Gary Smith introduced our speaker, Lawrence Riel, a constable of 30 years (five or so with Oak Bay). Gary's intro contained a confession of a family familiar with being in front of a judge but not so often in front of a police officer. Lawrence is a great-nephew of Louis Riel.

We were then taken through a presentation of all the bad guys out there trying to steal our money through frauds, tricks and bogus offers of weight loss, miracle drugs, online offers, phony home repairs, cheque fraud on e-bay, identity theft ... and other cheery things. Even Lawrence admitted to being a victim of a hustle, once losing $3500. Then again he did tell us that people from the mid-west (he's from Edmonton) are often stupid and that's why they get caught. People in Victoria are apparently smarter than Edmontonians or anyone else for that matter. Lawrence's warnings were intensive and well-listened-to. I kept getting the impression he'd make a perfect vice presidential running mate to Donald Trump. Lawrence was funny, charming and down-to-earth. (unlike the Donald).

Mary Canty

Mary Canty (above) thanked our speaker and also mentioned charmingly that she was born close to where Louis Riel was hanged. An interesting closing remark to a good meeting.

Important (repeat) notice from President John:

Please look in your drawers, cupboards, refrigerators, sofas, anywhere you might hide stuff, for any old Oak Bay Rotary items - such things as banners (OB and exchanged), Paul Harris pins and medallions, Rotary pins, mugs, display items - anything you no longer need that might save the club a lot of money in purchasing costs. Think of it as just a wee bit of Spring Cleaning.

Visiting Rotarians And Guests
Tav
introduced his guest, Jim Laing. Well done Tav!

Sergeant-at-Arms:
Happy 'n' sad dollars drew the comments of Lorna who once again is abandoning us to get happily lost in San Francisco, Nashville, Memphis, Mississippi, ending up in New Orleans. Lorna ... beware of tall good lookin guys called 'Bubba'.

David Philip pointed out that our newest Royal newlyweds were graduates of St. Andrews University. This scribe did not look it up but I get the sneaking suspicion David might have visited that campus at one time.

Joan Firkins has been chosen to be the aide to a Rotary VIP visiting these parts soon; maybe we might even meet this distinguished individual. Good on ya Joan!

Heather thanked Lorna for organizing a successful evening enjoying the performance of the school of performing arts.

Perry and Annamaria are off to Italy soon, Florence included, to take in a performance of one magical thing or another. Perry ... remember this warning ... the problem with eating Italian food is that 3 or 4 days later, you're hungry again. Safe travels!

Lori couldn't resist poking fun at Lorna for her disappearing act during our Tuscan dinner. On that night please refer to her as Lorna if you wish to, though Lori is shorter (actually she's a few inches taller I think but you get the idea).

After a bit of confusion where Mark Bedford tried to claim the winning draw ticket with an invalid number, order was restored and properly awarded to Anne Sims, who drew a 'not-white' orb.
