President Jack announced that in keeping with Literacy Month the Board has decided that a minimum of $6,000 from the Soul Gospel Choir Concert on April 26 would be donated to the Victortia Read Society. So far 643 tickets have been sold and it is hoped to reach 800, so all members are asked lto pitch in and promote the event.. He also welcomed back two world travellers; Kathleen Froese from Thailand (who also had her mother as her visiting Rotarian guest) and John Edgell from Australia. Shannon Hellyer has been approved by the Board to become a member of the Club. She is the owner of the Oak Bay Hardware Store. If any one has any comments or concerns could they please speak to Jack or Vicky within the next seven days?

Health of the Club: President Jack reported that Bill Sharlow, who is now 92, has difficulty walking due to gout and arthritis. He misses getting out to the Club and would appreciate a visit or a phone call.

Sergeant-at-Arms
Brian Lamb came to the podium amidst resounding applause, as he blessed his flock once again with numerous fines. These included those who did not pay for their luncheon with exact change, John Edgell for missing his “duty” on the roster while in Australia, Nels for wearing a bandage last week as he impersonated Allan Iverson in vain, Neil for not editing out the Realty sponsor for the Gospel Singers event and anyone who was still wearing green after the official closing of St. Patrick’s Day. Lynne Murrary fined Pres. Jack for glaring errors in his PowerPoint slides. Tom Lidkea was celebrated for his birthday. Both John Edgell and Kathleen Froese offered “Happy $” for returning to Victoria; Perry for gratitude for successful eye surgery. Brian Lamb expressed gratitude for a fund raising dinner held by his rowing club. Leslie Warnock-Rogers won the draw for $117.

Guest Speaker:

Bob Beauvais introduced Brandy Patterson, the guest speaker, who had recently returned from working for “Habitat for Humanity” in Ghana. She and Bruce Cayford (unable to attend) had gone to Africa along with 16 others to assist in the construction of houses in the town of Kofiase. This town of 5000 has 3000 women and 2000 men, where 26 houses have been constructed since 2003. She provided slides and commentary. The houses are constructed from handmade mud bricks and metal roofs, with cement floors and cement covering the bricks. Simple and low maintenance. Local qualified masons supervised the volunteers while village chiefs donated the land. Brandy and her team of 18 volunteers lived simply and ate well while being treated with gratitude, often followed about by inquisitive children. Brandy and the other volunteers had also brought schools supplies to donate to both local and distant schools. She was surprised at how many were using modern computers and software. Some of the houses sheltered several families and their extended families. The local people also contributed time, energy, and money in a festive fund raising event. When the houses were complete there was a ceremonial presentation including a prayer and the passing of the key to the new owners. Brandy and the other volunteers were given locally woven scarves as a token of heartfelt appreciation by the villagers. All the volunteers left behind many articles of personal clothing for those less fortunate. Brandy thanked our club for the donations we had made which helped make her trip to Ghana possible. Giles Bixler thanked the speaker not only for her presentation but for reminding us all of the blessings we share here in Canada. Pres. Jack presented Brandy with a Club Mug.

Jack then concluded the meeting with a musical slide presentation tribute showing the events and friendships enjoyed by Ola, our inbound student from Poland, over the past school year. The meeting was adjourned following the singing of God Save the Queen.
