Our numbers were thinned by the impending Canada Day holiday ...

Happy Canada Day Rotarians
HAPPY CANADA DAY

but Oak Bay Rotarians held a rousing celebration ringing out the old board of directors and ringing in the new at the Uplands Golf Course Clubhouse on June 30. Master of Ceremonies David Maxwell outlined the evening's events for us and thanked Joan Peggs, Lynne Murray, Tricia Timmermans and Lorna Curtis for organizing the evening. He then called on Mark Bedford to recite Grace after which we proceeded to the buffet for steaks and selections from a wide array of accompanying dishes. This pleasant meal was accompanied by Jan Stirling on piano.

President Vicky and President Neil
Incoming President Victoria Pitt presents outgoing President Neil Rawnsley with a plaque representing outstanding leadership in his year as President.

President Neil's farewell:
Outgoing president Neil Rawnsley began by thanking all who helped make his year more successful and thanked retiring board members, Jack Petrie, Heather Aked and treasurer George Pritchard, for their years of service. Brian Lamb is replacing George as treasurer and Peter Lawrie is replacing Heather as Community Service Chair. Jack can't be replaced. Neil congratulated Tav Macpherson on his appointment as Assistant Governor of Rotary District 5020 and noted the membership's choice of Peter Lawrie as Rotarian of the Year, which Neil presented at last week's meeting. Neil then presented Lorna Curtis with a leadership award for service above self, Tricia Timmermans with a service above self award for her Rotoplast work, Heather Aked with a president's award for outstanding support and excellence and Neil Madsen with an award for outstanding service and dedication as editor of the club bulletin. Neil's final quote was what he termed the ten most powerful words in the language: "If it is to be it is up to me."  He ended by thanking us all for letting him steer the Rotary ship this year.

Assistant District Governor Tav MacPherson then called the new president and board of the club to the front of the assembled members for the installation ceremony (although as Foundation Chair he also had to install himself). They are: Victoria Pitt, president; John Edgell, president-elect, Neil Rawnsley, past president, Lynne Murray, secretary, Brian Lamb, treasurer and committee chairs Perry Bamji, International Service, Peter Lawrie, Community Service, Gary Nazar, Public relations, Jim Force, Membership, Tav Macpherson, Foundation and Joan Peggs, Club Administration.

New president Victoria Pitt presented outgoing president Neil with a plaque recognizing "outstanding leadership in your term as president." She then turned to the assembled members and said "I'm looking forward to your support. Our 35th year as a club begins." And there the formalities came to a close.

ENTERTAINMENT
The evening's entertainment then followed, led by Jordan Hanson's Passion for Percussion show… starring all of the Rotary members present and their guests. Jordan led members in playing an assortment of instruments: drums, wooden frogs and and a range of other noisemakers. (Incoming president Victoria Pitt got to play the biggest  frog, which made the most resonant croak.) The enthusiasm for noise-making seemed contagious and enjoyable although we aren't going on tour anytime soon.
