NEWS!

District Governor 2010-11 Bob Martin announced "with great pleasure" in early June that our Clubs have selected PDG Joan Firkins of the Rotary Club of Oak Bay to be our representative on the Zone 25 Nominating Committee for the next RI Director to follow RI Director Ken Boyd. They will serve 2013-2015. PDG Bill McCarthy has been selected as alternate.

The elegant Palm Court of the Empress Hotel was the setting for the Installation Dinner for President-elect Joan Peggs, and the Farewell Roast for outgoing President John Edgell (right).

More than 60 members and spouses mingled over drinks after which MC, Lorna Curtis, welcomed everyone. Eugen Bannerman said a First Nations Blessing for Food, and after answering a skill-testing question, Tables 1 to 6 queued up for the delicious curry buffet. A novel but successful feature at the dinner was the seating plan prepared by Joan Peggs to avoid the confusion of walking around seeking out a seat. Tav Macpherson (above) presented President John with the Presidential Citation Award, with Distinction, for his year in office. The musical theme for 2011-12 was projected by Corey Burger onto the screen. “When I see a need, I like to lend a helping hand.”
The Farewell Roast, offered “to honour somebody, with comedy, and true and not-true stories” was presented by Joan Peggs, Heather Aked (who gifted John with a 3-minute sand-timer), Joan Firkins (who claimed, “My name is John Edgell, and I am President of the Oak Bay Rotary Club, and I am not here today.”). Tav Macpherson spoke with much humour and showed slides of John with Hilary Clinton, and John and the Queen, and even John as the laughing bridesmaid in a picture with Prince William and Kate Middleton kissing on their wedding day. John later remarked that he always did want to mingle in high circles - well John, you made it! [Copies are available for blackmailing purposes from your webmaster!]

Outgoing President John spoke briefly, thanked each board member individually, reviewed and showed slides of the past year, and was presented with a frame-able banner, and plaque.

Past District Governor, Joan Firkins, and Assistant Governor, Tav Macpherson, installed the 2011-12 Board. Tricia Timmermans took photos of the group (minus the 3 members who were not present and who will be installed at the July 5 meeting). A great celebration in an elegant location.

Thank you, Joan. You have started your year with great style.

2011-12 PRESIDENT JOAN'S CLOSING REMARKS:

“I am not certain how I so quickly became president. When Rod Sim asked me to join the Club, I said I would join but I was so involved with other activities that I needed to take a ‘back seat’ with involvement. Well, Rod, this is some back seat!” Joan compared Oak Bay Rotary to a ship within “the fleet of Rotary.” “As a Club, I see us as a ‘ship’ within the fleet of Rotary: Kalyan Banerjee is the Commodore. The newly appointed General Secretary is the Commander. I, for this year, am the captain of our ship.” (At this point, Joan donned her New Orleans Convention Hat). “For this year…it is my captain’s hat. No ship travels far without Officers—we have just installed some of the very capable officers for this year. But most importantly, the Captain and Officers need to be supported by a crew. You are the crew. We depend on your work, enthusiasm, interest and support to move this ship through the fleet. We all need to work together, reaching within to embrace humanity.” An Officer or Crew at each of our tables then presented Rotary members with a Reach Within to Embrace Humanity pin. A slide show of this year’s musical theme closed the evening.
