John Edgell

President John (above) opened the meeting with a comment on the rise in luncheon fees. As of August 2, 2010, the luncheon cost will rise from the present $16 to $18. $1 of the $2 rise is attributed to the HST. President John did not mention what the second dollar rise was for?  Stay tuned for the next meeting for this announcement!

Grace Booklet

After Grace by Jim Force, very eloquently recited from our Club’s very own Rotary Book of Invocations for all Occasions [aka Giving Thanks], lunch was served.

The Four-way-test and other “Rotary Readings” were recited verbatim by Don O’Coffey, Heather Aked, Foster Isherwood and Jack Petrie.

The Celebrations Master, Dallas Chapple managed to extract a fair few dollars from those present. Happy Bucks added more dollars to the coffers. {Bulletin Reporter’s Note: Now that President John has set a precedent using the roving microphone, it would be nice if all Club members made use of this marvellous technology for any and all announcements so that we might hear them better! To save time passing the microphone around, all announcements should be made from the podium.}

Rotarian poet Foster Isherwood (pictured at right) paid a fine to read  a sonnet that he wrote. He was celebrating his 60th High School graduation. A fellow graduate suggested he compose a poem for the event much as he had done 60 years ago; this is the result.

Johan Nielsen
Johan joking about having cycled to the meeting from way too far away!

Eugen Bannerman introduced our guest speaker, Rotarian Johan Nielsen (pictured left) from Club Rotario Bahía de Jaltemba – La Peñita, Nayarit, Mexico. (Jaltemba Bay is 2 hours north of Puerto Vallarta on the Pacific Coast of Mexico). The club was chartered in 2009 and has a mix of Mexican and foreign persons (mainly retired Americans and Canadians) as members. The club also attracts a lot of visiting Rotarians who come to vacation in the area. Johan is one such retiree from Canada. He spoke of several local projects that their club supports. The projects are mainly for supporting schools and the local children. Johan quoted the following projects (links are attached for more information):

The kindergarten Juan Escutia in La Colonia, las Cabras and the Luis Pasteur Primary School Project in conjunction with the Rotary Club of Oak Bay. We have recently applied for a District Matching Grant (Rumour has it that this $5,000 US grant has been approved!)

The Luis Pasteur School project is aimed at improving the condition of the school by:

  • Providing a consistent water supply.
  • Improving the security perimeter fence.
  • Providing a safe playing area for the children.

These improvements will benefit the current 30 students and an increasing number each year. The project will include an underground 5,000 liter water cistern which will be installed on the land in front of the classroom. This is needed to capture water from an irregular water supply from the municipality. The ground above this cistern will be levelled to form a safe playing area for the children. The electrical supply will be upgraded because it is not up to current standards.  No electrical work will be done inside the building.   Additionally, the existing front wall will be repaired and reinforced and the chain link fence will be moved to the top of the wall for increased security.  The exterior walls will be painted. The project  also involves “sweat labour” from Rotarians and several local volunteers including parents of the school children.

President John Edgell hopes to visit the School when he goes on a vacation to La Peñita  in February 2011. {John, just remember to first roll up your sleeves and get the project done before you  down those Cervezas!}

In thanking the speaker, Perry Bamji mentioned the excellent teamwork between Johan Nielsen, their Rotary Club President Eduardo (Eddie) Dominguez,  and himself  during the process of compiling the Matching Grant application. The speed and efficiency with which all the information was exchanged between three busy persons was instrumental in sending off our DMG application well ahead of the due date. This promises to be a great project for our club.

President John closed the proceedings with The Queen.

A Sonnet

Where does the wind blow
as it goes rushing by,
stirring my thoughts of gentle times?

They wish to dwell and stay,
tell me where I might have been,
see the sun set and rise again.

When the rhythm of life turns,
times and sets the way,
we take our place
the mortal part to play.

And as we go there is still that hope,
Nothing lost, but all regained.
for as with time,
We share it all, my friend!
