Program for July 19, 2005 - Club Assembly

President David reminded us that literacy is one of the principal goals of our new R.I. President. As reported in Joan's new newsletter, Books for Schools is one way to go. David hopes to get the Interact Club involved in the fall.

Visiting Rotarians & Guests, introduced by Irene Davie

Percy Butler, Victoria, S/A; Terry Daniels, Harbourside, S/A. Marnie Ainslie, outbound student to Japan, guest of the Club, and Bedriya Hromic was guest of Lea Chambers.

New Member proposed by Lea Chambers: Bedriya Hromic is from Bosnia/Herzegovina and began her career as a teacher in 1983 and then became Director of the Dept. of Social Services and then became a Project Manager with CARE Canada. She immigrated to Canada in 1996; Citizenship in 1999. Joining CIDA, she was seconded to the Org. for Security & Coop. in Europe as a civilian expert to support Canadian peacekeeping in the Balkans. She also did work for the U.N. Mission in Kosovo and helped organize local elections in the Balkans to great success. She has recently completed her MBA at Royal Roads University and has been doing business consulting while seeking full time employment in several government organizations. The mother of a 21 year old son she enjoys hiking and looks forward to joining Rotary and contributing to the furthering of full-time global understanding and development. The Board has already approved Bedriya's membership, subject to any last minute objections, and she will be inducted today.

No surprise that Pres. David named Lea as Rotarian of the Week

Dallas Chapple announced that Dr. Juanita Harris, Chair of the Carolwood Manor Summer Splash Festival, is opening her home to a garden party July 31, from 2 PM till dusk. Enjoy a formal dinner, silent auction, and dance to the sounds of the Dal Richards' Orchestra. (Tax deductible) tickets are $50 and proceeds go to the Panorama Recreation Centre's new playground for disabled children. Dallas is putting together two tables; phone her at 652-4880.

Sergeant-at-Arms Dallas Chapple fined all those not wearing jackets or yellow blouses. After these egregious fines, the rest was normal. Tom Croft donated $20 for his birthday. Tav is off to Europe for 3 weeks. Vicky won the draw but no white marble.

Goals of President David: 1. Earn a Presidential Citation, which includes $100 to R.I. from Every member. 2. Support the Foundation - the responsibility of Tav MacPherson. 3. Increase membership - the responsibility of Brian Lamb. 4. Support next year's District Conference, here in Victoria, with full attendance. 5. Make Joan Happy - support the D.G. in her new initiatives.

Budget - presented by George Pritchard.

The budget was passed out and has been approved by the Board. It includes ambitious increases from last year and requires active participation by all members.

Please see the various Service pages for reports presented.
