These are our major fundraisers;
it is hoped all members can help.
Les and Mary Canty reported generally on the health of the club. Specifically that Lorna had recently hurt her back and that Martin Holden's wife had been ill, which had kept him from attending meetings.
1. Preliminary announcement on the Rotary garage sale Saturday July 29th, 2006. More information to follow.
2. Home and Garden Tour, Saturday August 19th, 2006. Heather reported that there were 100 volunteers required for three to four hour shifts (sign up board was sent around). She has also sent out a general appeal by e-mail.
3. Lori reported on the Rotary Club/Elder Care Golf Tournament coming up Saturday August 25th, 2006. Specifically she was looking for donations.
Brian Lamb was named Rotarian of the Week for his work at the Windsor Park Oak Bay Centennial Celebration.
Sergeant-at-Arms, Ben Andersen
, generally abused everyone and dished out a record number of fines. Apparently, while taking cash for lunch, he heard all kinds of things that members unwisely (or unwittingly) burbled out. Everyone sang Happy Birthday to Heather
who celebrates on July 20. Brian Lamb
won the draw but failed to pull out the white marble.

| Guest Speaker
John Snively introduced the speaker, Tim Van Vliet. Tim gave a very lively and informative talk on health and wellness in the modern age. Tim started out by advising that in the modern age there is conflicting advice on different health issues. Specifically Tim talked about free radicals being created from stress, radiation and pollution among other factors. Most of these are activated oxygen molecules which are strong oxidizers and can damage DNA and other essential cellular constituents. Tim went on to explain that his theory on combating free radicals is by offering the body antioxidants. Examples of antioxidants are Vitamin E, Vitamin C and Beta Carotene. Past civilizations were getting amounts of antioxidants by proper diet and eating lots of vegetables.
However, Tim believes that modern vegetables do not have enough of these and accordingly he recommends supplements. Tim mentioned the stat that half of Americans are not receiving enough of the daily allowance of different vitamins. Tim then went on to recommend some supplements over others.The speaker was thanked by Will Carter.
Speaker, Tim Van Vliet
to bring home a point.
