Meeting July 5, 2011. First of 2011-2012 year. Joan Peggs President. Reported by Jack Petrie. Photos: Tricia & Jack

'Twas a sunny day when Joan started her first meeting as our new president adorned in a 'chef de mission' peaked hat; after a few remarks about those missing in action (Gary and Barbara), Don O'Coffey delivered Grace and Tom plied the ivories for 'Oh Canada'; then we were off to the groaning sideboard of barbecued chicken and fixins'.

Sergeant at Arms
Lorna Curtis took her maiden voyage as the 'artist formerly known as celebrations reverted to sgt@arms'. She cleaned out quite a few pockets, scoring mad money for Joan Peggs' hat, Dave Maxwell's gratuitous search for publicity, non-attendees of the recent club-in-a-pub, Canada Day no-shows or those not wearing red and white that day; then she recognized a whack of members celebrating anniversary-date tenure in the club. Heather was the leader of that pack, even though she's like only in her twenties. Happy/Sad dollars erupted from Leslie who bemoaned the lack of spittable pits in the watermelon; Lorna shared her soon-to-be retirement news from a job she loves. She also warned us that next week we are each to wear a hat that either represents something about us or at least evokes a response such as 'what the hell are you wearing?' Jack shared some bucks for the happy news of a very successful Victoria Jazz Festival of which he is a director, Heather for many years of wedded bliss (yet she's still just a teenager); there were others, notably Tricia for having her whole family arrive from the US and Australia at varying times over the summer. John Jordan won the draw but grabbed a dark marble.

Joan started off by "installing" our 3 directors who missed the installation dinner last week, namely Peter Lawrie, Leslie Rogers-Warnock and Ron Beyer (below).

Lori McLeod asked for volunteers to help her and Lorna as our club will have a presence in the village (August 14th) with the annual Classic Car gig. Jane Currie of the Nanaimo club reminded us of the Symphony Splash on Sunday July 31st. Leo Lee of the Victoria club spoke of the upcoming raffle for the car (or cash) that we will see at various malls and gathering spots. Don Tarant of the Crofton club didn't have anything to sell...he just enjoyed himself and behaved quite well. Welcome to those three visiting Rotarians!

New member Phil Neroutsos (right) made a sparkling introduction of the day's speaker, Don OCoffey (below). Phil tweeted, in the old fashioned way of tweeting, i.e. with a whistle, while wearing a commander's hat; in the most formal and seaworthy fashion, he allowed Don to walk the plank to the podium.
Don brought us up to speed on the 50th anniversary of the Gorge View Society where many seniors live in subsidized housing from as low as $260 per month. (It is also known as Chown Place). It is a community of mixed cultures and religions, a microcosm of harmony held together perhaps with a humorous slogan: Don reports they are heard repeating, "Keep moving or they throw dirt on you."

We finished ahead of schedule. Well done Joan! Well done everyone!!

Corey Burger informed us that Mary, his grandmother and our stalwart clubmate, has undergone eye treatment and will return as soon as possible. Jim Force enthusiastically reviewed the history of our club-in-a-pub at it's 25th occasion. 44 different members have attended, 6 visiting Rotarians, 3 Rotaract students, 1 Ambassadorial Scholar, 17 other guests, for a total of 71 different attendees; that's 252 folks total with an average of 10 per gathering. Well done Jim!
