Program for January 11, 2010. Reported by Lynne Murray

With a packed agenda looming, Tom Lidkea played O Canada – we sang beautifully! Renate Gibbs said grace but before we sprang to the buffet table, President John introduced  Oak Bay Police Constable, Laurence Riel, the Community Liaison Officer. He told us that if we had any queries he would be more than happy to come to the Club with a presentation.

Ron Beyer PHF

President John very happily presented Ron Beyer with his second Paul Harris Fellowship pin.

Celebration Master:

Celebration Master, Mark Bedford, levied the usual fines, though in a shortened time. President John had to throw in $3 because Mark didn’t have enough time to name the fines: those who did not shake the phantom Joe P’s hand, Tom Croft for not letting us know he was coming today and Lynne for not giving the Birthday/ Anniversary list to Mark.

BIRTHDAYS: Both Joan Firkins and Jack Petrie are a year older by next Tuesday!

Happy $$ were paid by Jim Force. He now has 5 grandsons and Lynne is off to Cuba for 2 weeks. 50/50 was drawn by Bill Burns but that’s all he won.

Past Presidents
President John Edgell with past presidents Heather Aked, Joan Firkins and Mark Bedford. See the Presidents' Reports at right.

David Bratzer
Our speaker, David Bratzer (above) was introduced by David Maxwell. David is a local Police Constable but for a number of years he has also worked for LEAP (Law Enforcement Against Prohibition). LEAP (click for more info or check the blog here) is a 10,000 member organization created to give voice to law enforcers, who feel the War on Drugs is a failed policy. It also supports legalized regulation of drugs as an alternative that will lower the incidence of death, disease, crime and addiction, while saving tax dollars. Since 1970, the US has spent over a trillion dollars fighting the illegal drug trade. Prohibition failed in the 20’s and 30’s just as drug prohibition is failing today. This group sees that if we work against drug prohibition all the crimes surrounding drug use should stop.

Lorna Curtis gave a very heartrending thanks to David and presented him with a coveted mug.

John reminded us that he is off to Mexico for his annual holiday. P-E Joan Peggs will run the show until mid-March.

The Queen ended our meeting.

Visiting Rotarians And Guests
Introduced by Will Carter: David Bratzer (our speaker), former member Tom Croft, and returning Rotarians Penny and Rob Morton from Mawddoch, North Wales.

After a delicious meal of perogies and sausages, President John introduced 3 Past-Presidents, so they could highlight their year as President. First up was Heather Aked Heather Aked (above) (2003-04). Almost as soon as Heather accepted her role as President-Elect, she discovered she was pregnant! She had to attend PETS with an almost newborn and her husband Tim so he could mind Alex between feedings! As President, she quickly found that she relied on Club members, far more than she ever imagined. Next was Past-President, Mark Bedford (1997-98). Mark’s most notable comment was “We bring all we have to offer to Rotary”. He also extolled the virtues of women as Rotarians. Last, but certainly not least was Past-President and PDG, Joan Firkins (1996-97). As President, Joan noted, the year was a time for much personal growth. We all go through much change as can be seen by how often our Club profile changes. Members come and go, some pass away. All three P-P’s were presented with the RI Presidential Theme Banners from their years.
