THE ROTARY FOUNDATION

The ROTARY FOUNDATION is a not-for-profit corporation which supports the efforts of Rotary International to achieve world understanding and peace through international humanitarian, educational, and cultural programs.

Born in 1917, as the brainchild of RI President Arch V. Klumph and with a donation of $26.50, the ROTARY FOUNDATION has expanded to reach the financial health and world importance that it enjoys today. Each day millions of people are touched by the projects that change lives both at home and around the world.

The ROTARY FOUNDATION is supported solely by voluntary donations from Rotarians and friends of the Foundation who share in the vision of a better world. All expenses are born entirely from the interest on the contributions. Strong financial oversight, a stellar charity rating, and a unique funding model means that Rotary makes the very most of our contributions.

As the charitable arm of Rotary, the Foundation taps into a global network of Rotarians who invest their time, money and expertise into priorities such as eradicating polio and promoting peace. In 1985, Rotary’s leadership, inspired by the World Health Assembly passed a resolution to eradicate polio throughout the world.  An ambitious task, Rotary partnered with the World Health Organization, UNICEF and the U.S. Centers for Disease Control to form the Global Polio Eradication Initiative in 1988. With the assistance of challenge grants from the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation we are closer to riding the world of this dreaded disease. While Rotary is proud of the work we have done, we cannot let up in our efforts. The primary goal of the Foundation remains the eradication of the poliovirus from the face of the earth.

ROTARY FOUNDATION grants empower Rotarians to approach challenges such as poverty, illiteracy and malnutrition with sustainable solutions that leave a lasting impact. Humanitarian programs fuel international Rotary projects improving the quality of life, providing health care, clean water, food, education, disaster relief and other essential needs primarily in the developing world. The Foundation, through its Ambassadorial Scholarships and Peace Fellowship programs supports the largest non-governmental and most international scholarship program in the world.

The members of the Rotary Club of Oak Bay have been generous supporters of the ROTARY FOUNDATION. Club members have been active participants in international projects in India, Malawi, Rwanda, Mexico and Guatemala. “Our Foundation is the engine that drives the Rotary machine. It gives us the chance to fulfill the opportunities for service both within our community and internationally.”
