Introduced by Tav Macpherson:
Rotarian Burt Kennedy from Winnipeg;
Lesely Cobus,
guest of Lorna Curtis.

ANNOUNCEMENTS:

May 15th is our big fundraiser- Italian night at the Monterey Centre. All members will need to contribute in some way especially through donating silent auction items. More to come next week from Lorna and the committee

Feb 23 there will be Blitz on the avenue with lunch at the Penny Farthing afterwards.

Lesley Cobus reminded us about the Olympic Opening ceremonies in the Oak Bay Recreation Centre lounge on Feb 12th. Free rec centre and pool admission!!  Also the Monterey Garage sale is on Feb 27th to support the seniors. Please drop off items to Lesley at Monterey centre.

The speaker of the day, Joan Firkins, was eloquently introduced by Neil Madsen . Joan gave a great slide show of her trip to Ethiopia (her 4th) which took place in October, 2008. Eight Rotarians from the Island attended and 58 in all.   In 2009 there were 1500 new cases of Polio in the world - all from the 4 worst  affected countries, Pakistan, Afghanistan, India and Nigeria.

Joan emphasized the need to keep immunizing; the National Immunization Days (NIDs) are continuing in the world. Rotarians need to keep supporting the Polio campaigns.

Joan's trip took her not to just NIDs, but hospitals, wheelchair clinics, the Aware House, Accede, the Trampled Rose and other  entities designed to help those with AIDs or who need safety, education and help.

The International Rotary convention is to be held in Montreal in June with great guest speakers!!

Don Olgren was quoted as saying 10,000 shelter boxes have been sent to Haiti and there could be up to 20,000. Support has been amazing. If you donate to Shelter box via the Foundation you can get a tax receipt.

Lori and her gang of social planners have 4 upcoming events:

March 13th: Guess whose coming to dinner. Be a host or a guest.

April 18th: A walk and lunch at the Penny Farthing.
