PHF Recipients at last week's meeting.
In his opening remarks, President Jack reminded us that our theme for May is “Good Friends”. In addition to also reminding
us we are encouraged to bring a friend out to our Rotary meetings and introduce them to Rotary, he listed off some of the groups we support such as the Read Society, Eldercare, Oak Bay Heritage, Interact, Victim Services and some inner city schools. (Who can forget all of our support for Oak Bay Recreation over the years?)
Tom Lidkea played for O Canada and Hans Ockermueller said grace.
Visitors, introduced by President Jack
Our only visitor was our guest speaker, Crystal Stranaghan
Announcements
Will Carter announced our annual participation at the Oak Bay Tea Party which will require help on Friday June 6 (set up) and June 7 and 8 for shifts into the evening making and selling candy floss and popcorn. While the sign-up sheet will continue to circulate, for those not able to make the next meeting
or two, work during the Tea Party will qualify as a make up and its also a great opportunity to spend time with fellow club members covered in sticky candy floss. Contact Will directly if you won’t be at an upcoming meeting to sign up for a shift. This event that both brings in money and gives us community profile needs lots of helpers.
Neil Rawnsley reminded us to return the survey which he needs back from everyone, indicating areas we would like to work in next year. Also, mark the evening of July 2 on your calendar as our Club Installation Dinner to be held at the Uplands Golf Course.
Lynne Murray announced that Ola will be choreographing one of the dances at an Oak Bay High School “Evening of Dance” to be held on both May 20 and 21; tickets are $5 each, contact Lynne to find out more.
Perry Bamji reminded us about World Partnership Walk on Sunday May 25, at 11:00 AM in Beacon Hill Park, Cameron Bandshell.
Efficient Heather Aked reminded us about the Social at Jack Petrie’s back yard on May 24; you need to sign up. Starts about 5:00 and Heather promises fun games. Heather corrects your Editor and informs him that everyone should bring their own beverages as well as either appy, salad or desert to be shared.
Health of the Club
Gary Smith has pneumonia which he picked up on a recent trip so we hope he is recovering
quickly. |

Sergeant-at-Arms
Brian Lamb was brilliant while levying many fun fines including those to Ted Chambers, Ron Gaudet and Tom Lidkea. Many people were also Happy and Sad but it was too much to run this part of the meeting and take notes at the same time so we will have to go on trust here.
Your Editor took some notes, including the fact that Ted Chambers was much too relaxed for a cashier. Later, Ted couldn’t balance so he and David Sills toiled late to try to fix it. Well, he was Dean of the Business School at U. of A. All those who had not yet signed up for a committee, as aked by Neil Rawnsley, were fined. Ron Gaudet fined himself in a mood of sorrow for all those who believed the media reports about how the police had reacted to the murder scene on King George Tce.
Wolf Schopper and his wife celebrate an anniversary and Lorna Curtis won the draw.

Guest Speaker, Crystal Stranaghan, was introduced by Nels Granewall. Crystal is a Publisher
and owns Gumboot Books in Vancouver. While growing up in Qualicum Beach, Crystal was introduced to Rotary through her father’s participation in the Qualicum Beach Rotary Club. Crystal is proposing a project, joining forces with Rotary, in supporting literacy
through the production of a children’s book, entitled “A World of Stories” planned to be available on Sept 8, 2008 which is World Literacy Day. All authors and illustrators have donated their time and talents and Gumboot Books is handling all aspects of editing, design, production and marketing. 50% of revenues will be donated to Rotary District 5020 from each book sold in Canada and the US. Gumboot Books is approaching the clubs in District 5020 for sponsorship in the form of pre-ordering copies of the books to donate to libraries, schools and literacy groups in their area. “A World of Books” is a collection of stories celebrating a variety of international holidays that can be celebrated worldwide, regardless of religious or cultural background. They are intended to be enjoyed by children 12 and under, but are also suitable for anyone learning
to read English. Each story has a theme or message that relates in some way to the corresponding holiday and each story will be introduced with some information about the day being celebrated. Educational materials will also be available on the website to assist teachers and parents with expanding on the experience.
Rotary Club sponsorship opportunities are listed on the website (www.gumbootbooks.ca) and range from $500 to $1000.
David Philip thanked Crystal on behalf of the club and President Jack gave a nod and a wink to the concept so we may hear more about our club’s involvement. Individual books will be available at $24.95 per book.
