Announcements:

On October 3 our club is hosting The Ted Harrison Celebration at the Fairmont Empress where fellow Rotarian Ted will be honoured. Tickets are $95 and reportedly selling well. Let's talk this fabulous event up and make sure all the tickets are sold!

A Nine and Dine is planned for September 18 at the Uplands Golf Course.

Fellow Rotarian Foster Isherwood is quite ill. Best wishes to Foster for a speedy recovery.

Harkers

Guest Speakers, Catriona and Chris Harker, (seen above with President Vicky) spoke on their featured subject, "Support Means Never Having to Say Impossible (How Societal Change Occurs Through the Education of Young Women in Tanzania). Tanzania is an impoverished African country not unlike Malawi of which we have learned so much. The Harkers are associated with the Canadian Harambee Education Society (CHES). Their focus is on the community of Katesh in the north of Tanzania. CHES supports young Tanzanian women who are unable to continue their education because family resources have been diverted elsewhere. For about $500 annually, a girl can attend school and have her school supplies and often housing paid. CHES goes beyond that to counsel and educate young women in community and daily life issues. The Harkers say that their personal greatest success was in building dorms for girls at a school which until then was a boys-only school due to no accommodation for girls. Now the girls may attend. As well, running water is now provided to all dorms and the kitchens. Catriona and Chris asked us to remember that, "When you educate a girl, you educate a family. When you educate a family, you educate a community."

As usual, our meeting adjourned with God Save the Queen.
