2008-2009 Rotary International Theme: Make Dreams Real
District 5020 Governor 08-09: Brian Beagle Assistant District Governor: David Stocks
Join us at Noon on Tuesdays at the Oak Bay Recreation Centre ( MAP)

Meeting, August 19, 2008, reported by Wendie Hogarth. CLICK HERE for Print Version

President Neil began by asking, What is Rotary?. Here is the answer from the 1937-38 RI President, Maurice Duperrey of Paris that he gave at the 1938 RI convention in San Francisco: Rotary is so simple that many people do not understand it, and some even misunderstand it. Rotary is not a philosophy, nor an all-embracing world point of view which answers every question and satisfies all the dictates of the heart and mind. Rotary is merely an association of business and professional men (and now, women) united in the ideal of service.
Paul Harris asked in 1944: "What is Rotary, what is it all about? Beneath Rotary’s many and varied activities there is the undertone of goodwill, goodwill, goodwill.
(We could substitute friendship, service or compassion for goodwill). And finally, one last quote, from Muhammed Ali: “Service is the rent you pay for your room here on earth”.

Sergeant at Arms, Dallas Chapple.
Fines were levied for everyone not wearing their new pins. Brian Lamb fined for cheering Olympians wearing a tuxedo. David Sills was fined for going the wrong direction to the meeting and there were fines for anyone who had not signed up for golf-either as a participant/ volunteer or as a sponsor. Liz Ashton was fined for being a guest so many times. Finally, here was a fine for anyone who has not paid their dues.
Birthdays:
John Edgell, Don O’Coffey, and Bob Beauvais.
Anniversaries: Don O’Coffey and Dallas Chapple.
Happy/Sad Dollars:
Brian Lamb had a Happy dollar as his daughter got married - which was why he was wearing a tuxedo at the Rowing Club watching the olympics. Mary Canty had a Happy dollar to have her grandchildren and her grandson's partner visiting her.

A HUGE THANK-YOU TO ALL WHO SPONSORED,

Download the registration form here and give to Lynne Murray before Wednesday, August 27.

Guest Speaker
Jim Force was introduced by Wynn Taylor. Jim’s presentation was on Membership. He started his talk noting that: Rotary membership isn’t about Rotary, it’s about Service above Self.

Jim Force

The following is a precis of his talk: FELLOWSHIP: A gang of friends. Quote by Patricia Madison: “Relationships grow when we do useful things together.” Rotary is about supporting each other through service and getting to know each other and building relationships. SERVICE: Individual work we do with others. ETHICS: The Rotarian’s Code of Conduct is embodied in The Four Way Test:
Of all the things we think, say or do, Is it the TRUTH? Is it FAIR to all concerned? Will it build GOODWILL and better FRIENDSHIPS? Will it be BENEFICIAL to all concerned? This can be accepted by all cultures; it forces us to think about our behaviours. What does it take? Courage, Generosity, Energy, Commitment, Optimism.

Quote, Dewitt Jones:“Life is not about being the best 'in' the world, but rather being the best 'for' the world.
We do make a difference; if every Rotarian gives $1.00 a week that is approximately 52 million dollars/year. That will make a difference.

MEMBERSHIP GOALS FOR THIS YEAR:
1. 65 Active members by the end of the year.
2. Retain new members.
3. 100% member participation/60% attendance.
Roster Duties (2 of the following) become a sustaining member; join a committee; volunteer at events;-participate in club activities.

MAKE DREAMS REAL.
Let others know we exist and what we do. Invite others to join with us in Service, in Fellowship and in Ethics. Giles Bixler thanked the guest speaker, our own Jim Force, for his very inspiring words.
