It was announced that club member Carl Jackson passed away a couple of day ago.  There will be a memorial service at the Uplands Golf Club on August 27th. Time to be announced.

Barb Cameron from the 2011 DLTA (District Leadership Training Assembly) Committee announced they are planning a Fellowship Friday in conjunction with the 2011 DLTA. The Fellowship Friday will be April 1, 2011 the night before the start of the DLTA. They are looking for Rotarians to host a group of 6 or more DLTA attendees for dinner or a BBQ.  As hosts, you will be required to transport guests from the Victoria Conference Centre and back.  It is suggested to have more than one club member assist with transportation and hosting.

If you are able to help please contact one of the following:

In Memoriam H.G. Carl Jackson 1938-2010

Carl Jackson

We learned with sorrow this week of the death of our fellow member, Carl. Carl was a proud Rotarian and will be missed. You can read his Times Colonist obituary here. The obituary states that Carl requested that no service be held, but that he would be pleased if you raised a glass to all the fun times and happy recollections, and, instead of flowers, to please make a donation to a charity of your choosing in his name.

Guest Speaker

Haida Bolton Zziwa Vianney

Carol Toal introduced the speaker – Haida Bolton (pictured above with Zziwa John Vianney), supervisor of hospital food services for the Nanaimo Regional Hospital, who is involved with Camp Uganda an organization that empowers youth to save endangered chimpanzees.

Haida has 14 years experience with children’s camps and is assisted by a team of Ugandan volunteers.  The purpose of the camp is to help conserve Africa’s endangered chimpanzees and other forest wildlife.  The camp is an educational camp in wildlife conservation for underprivileged seventh grade Ugandan students and their teachers.  The purpose is to increase compassion for and knowledge about wildlife and forests, provide protection for wild chimpanzees through educating children and teachers as well as to build children’s self esteem, confidence and independence.

The program gives campers a chance to come face to face with chimpanzees and other wildlife, feed animals, think about conservation, share their culture with others, pet a rhinoceros and realize animals get sick like humans.  The goal is to empower 90 Ugandan students and teachers each year.

Carol introduced Zziwa John Vianney, a Ugandan volunteer who works on the project with Haida. Zziwa thanked us enthusiastically for Rotary's help with the project. For more information visit their website

Peter Johannknecht thanked the speaker for enlightening us about this camp. Seen below are images from the Camp Uganda Website.

Visiting Rotarians And Guests

After the anthem and Grace, Brian Lamb introduced Harold Upham, guest of Carol Toal. Our other guests were Zziwa John Vianney and guest speaker, Haida Bolton.

Many club members have been asking Perry Bamji what we are doing to help Pakistan. The club is supporting Disaster Aid Canada.  Shelter boxes are $750 each.  A collection was taken and any donations $20 and over will receive a tax receipt.

Tricia Timmermans reported the Board of Directors has generously decided to donate $2000 to Rotaplast. But there’s more good news: There's a donor who is matching anything Rotarians come up with - up to $9,000 – to support the Cebu Mission. So the Oak Bay Rotary donation, which is in effect now $4000, will put the Cebu Mission right where it needs to be to be fully funded. Tricia will be taking part in the Cebu Mission as the photojournalist, which is the same position she filled when she took part in the 2008 Cebu Mission. On behalf of Rotaplast, she thanked the Directors and club members for their big-hearted donation.

August 31st is the 5th Tuesday of the month – there will be a BBQ luncheon where club members are welcome to bring friends and family.  Leslie will circulate a sign up list so the Recreation Centre can be prepared for additional numbers.

December lst – Pablo is organizing a Christmas Concert with professional musicians.  Tickets will be $25 – more details to come.

August 27th Lawnbowling Social at the Oak Bay Lawnbowling Club – those who have signed up will receive an email early next week with all the details.
