The meeting was called to order at 12:15PM. President Joan welcomed all members & guests and remined all of this being membership & extension month. Our national anthem was sung, and Grace was given by Barry Mutter.

Fines Master, Vicky Pitt, did an excellent job of raising some much need capital.

Lori McLeod & Lorna Curtis called up the members who did a terrific job working the car show – it was deemed another successful Rotary effort.

Dallas Chapple reminded members of the Founders Day potluck Aug. 27 at Macphersons home – a sign up sheet was passed around.

Heather Aked asked those interested to sign up for the August 30th Friends and Family Social Event Walking Tour: "Discover the Past". Those planning to attend please advise her and pre-pay for a bagged lunch (cash or cheque - $18) provided by Ambrosio of Wilmot Place - pasta salad, sandwich (vegetarian, beef turkey or ham) and a cookie. Your sandwich choice should be made when you sign up. Family and friends are welcome. Before lunch, John Adams will be guiding us on a walking tour around Oak Bay. Following the tour we will eat our bagged lunch on the grounds of Glenlyon school. Coffee and tea will be provided, but please bring a mug. Start: 12:15 at the corner of York Place and Oak Bay Avenue. We will continue on after lunch to Prospect Place, finishing at 1:30 p.m.

mercy ships

Neil Madsen (left) introduced guest speaker, Tim Maloney. Tim spoke in detail with a PowerPoint presentation (in a pretty shade of pink) about the wonderful work done by Mercy Ships, particularly the Africa Mercy, a hospital ship that features all-volunteer help of medical and other personnel. Sixteen countries, including Canada, are involved. Victoria is the contact city in Canada. Since 2009, Tim has been the Director for Mercy Ships. His job is fundraising and raising awareness of the Ships; they have an annual operating budget of 55 million dollars, with about 90 Canadians serving each year. The presentation was very powerful and Rotary worldwide has contributed for many years.

Heather Aked thanked the speaker and presented him with a Rotary Mug.

President Joan closed the meeting, suggesting that if there was someone in the room whom you had not greeted, to please do so prior to leaving.

God Save the Queen was sung followed by the Closing Bell. Have a great week.... Jim.

News from the Nelson contingent: Today at the Nelson Noon Rotary Club, it appeared that Oak Bay was taking over. In fact, almost 10% of members were present. They were: Mary Canty, Jacqueline Mealing, John Snively, Corey Burger, and Tricia Timmermans. Corey's brother Brian was also in attendance, as was John's son Saachi and a few other friends. Jacqueline, John and Tricia, plus Marilyn Lawrence of the Nelson Daybreak Club and Bob Hargreaves of the Nelson Noon Club, gave a well-received presentation on the projects occurring in Guatemala, which both Nelson Clubs (Daybreak and Noon) and the Oak Bay Club have helped, in personal service and with funds.
