President Vicky opened the meeting with a captivating and amusing video of four athletic men doing bizarre movements on, over and around six exercise treadmills to a hypnotic music track. You had to be there.

Announcements

David Philip speaking on behalf of the club’s Public Relations Committee stressed the importance of our members constantly promoting Rotary in our daily lives. "Talk it up, wear your pin, and do lunch at Rotary with a friend," David said. "We need to keep these things in mind to build and maintain a strong club."

Heather spoke for the Community Service Committee asking members to support literacy with Thrifty Smile Cards. The funds that we receive from this source are committed to our support of community literacy programs. Heather asked members to get a Smile card and use it. She also mentioned the upcoming social event /fundraiser “Nine & Dine” Sept 18th at Uplands Golf Club. You may also skip the golf and come just for the dinner. Heather urged members to bring a friend as well.

Tav Macpherson on behalf of the Foundation Committee reported that there will be a Foundation seminar in Duncan Sept 12, 7:00pm to 9:30pm at the Silver Bridge Inn. Tav also presented President Victoria Pitt with a certificate of membership in the Paul Harris Society

Don't forget our Club in a Pub "meeting" at the Penny Farthing Pub on Oak Bay Avenue every last Thursday of the month. This month's date is August 27. It's always a terrific success - and a pint and a half of laughs.

Please make sure you support the club's major fund raiser on this Sunday, August 16. If you cannot attend, consider buying a ticket for a friend who you think might enjoy it. Tickets are available at the Recreation Centre, Monterey Centre, Henderson Recreation Centre, and the Municipal Hall. Volunteers have put a lot of effort into the organization of this event, but tickets are not selling as we had hoped. It is up to YOU now to help make the event a success.

Guest Speaker

Our speaker this week was Rebecca Arrieta Vermeer from the Phillipines speaking about the eco-KALAN stoves. The eco-KALAN is a small or large insulated cooking device that can be used to advantage in many poor countries. It requires about 20% of the fuel that an ordinary fire pit would use. It produces very little smoke so it is a benefit to the environment. Some communities are very smoky and lung disease and health issues are a problem. In many countries the supply of fire wood is a day’s travel away from the villages. School children are fed at school and this involves them collecting fuel for cooking and less time for school work. The cost of these units can be recovered in fuel savings within one month.  Carol Toal (seen below with Mary Canty, Becky and Kees) thanked the speaker and presented her with a Four-way-test mug.
