Program for April 5, 2011 - Reported by Giles Bixler, Photos by Will Carter

Important notice from President John:
Please look in your drawers, cupboards, refrigerators, sofas, anywhere you might hide stuff, for any old Oak Bay Rotary items - such things as banners (OB and exchanged), Paul Harris pins and medallions, Rotary pins, mugs, display items - anything you no longer need that might save the club a lot of money in purchasing costs. Think of it as Spring Cleaning.

colleen jim johnOur meeting opened with the presentation of a Paul Harris Fellowship to Colleen Force (above) in appreciation of her contribution to better understanding and relationships among the people of the world through her extensive work as a teacher. Colleen was the guest of her husband Jim Force, who nominated her for the award.

NeilHappy dollars were contributed by Neil Rawnsley (above) for being at the recent Rotary Conference, Ron Beyer looking ruddy and relaxed after a visit to Whistler ski resort, and Lynne Murray who dramatically waved her injured arm in the air, to celebrate being free from the expectation that it will heal (Yes, you read that right.). Pablo Diemecke won the draw but did not get the white marble.

David Philip Adam PiteOur featured speaker was long-time club member Dr. David Phillip, (left, with Dr. Adam Pite, who did the introduction. He is the young dentist who is taking over the majority of David’s practice in Oak Bay. David will continue to go the office one day a week. David began with a series of slides of Etruscan dental prostheses, as a way of showing us that dentistry has been around for millennia. Then he outlined some of the improvements in dentistry in recent years:

  1. Today dentistry places emphasis on oral disease control and care.
  2. The use of computer-assisted impression-taking and improvements in manufacture of crowns, bridges, veneers and oral prostheses has greatly improved appearance and fit along with an increase in comfort level.
  3. Improvements in dentistry’s ability to enhance appearance can help a patient's confidence and sense of well-being.
  4. The predictability of diagnosis is improved with digital radiography. More detail is seen and less radiation is involved.
  5. Vision enhancers and lasers have improved dentists’ ability to perform delicate procedures in the mouth.

Dr. Pite outlined his experiences in teaching and dentistry in Tanzania which were sponsored by Rotary International.

David Maxwell thanked our speakers, we sang to the Queen, and adjourned.
